I do not own the Kindle Fire HD 7" but have a few questions, as I would like to putchase one asap depending on the responses I get. I read alot with my current kindle all at night in the dark in bed. I have the night light attachment for the current kindle, my wife doesn't like that as it is still a bit too bright for her. when you read in the dark with the kindle HD 7" is the back ground white with black letters and a light around the screen? can you control the brightness? is the back ground in color and the letters in white? I only will be reading and going to a few internet sites such as; yahoo fantasy baseball, & basketball boogleheads.org (its a finanial blog to read) and yahoo gaming area to play spades. can anyone answer these questions as i have not seen these items covered.

I had high hopes for this as it comes with a lot of cool technologies for a tablet like Dolby Digital and it comes with 2x more memory than the Nexus 7 (which I bought a month ago). I intended to buy this tablet for my mom because she likes my Nexus 7.

Upon booting the device, I realized that though this is Android-based, the interface is nothing like Android. You don't have your usual home screen where you can put your widgets in. You don't have the app drawer where your apps are located in. Instead, you have an interface that has "Shops" "Books "Videos" in text at the top (like the screenshots). It is a very closed ecosystem, but I didn't think it's going to be that closed and a completely different interface.

I tried playing with this for 10 minutes, but it's not customizeable enough. I tried searching for "Chrome" browser for Android in the Amazon Appstore, but found none. Apparently, you have to 'sideload' it. The Amazon Appstore is very limited compared to Android's Play Market. I stopped there, reset the device, disconnected my account, fill out the return form from Amazon and will be shipping it today.

It's sad to see all the good features in the tablet wasted in a closed ecosystem.

One more thing to note, the Nexus 7 is a lot smoother than the Kindle HD 7. One of the reason is that Nexus 7 has Google's latest OS, Android 4.1 (Jellybean/JB).
